Football: Dealing with the Backpass

DESCRIPTION

Start with one Goalkeeper, 3 defenders and 2 attackers. Set up 2 mini goals outside and wide of the penalty box.
Ball is played back to the Goalkeeper from one of the defending team.
As soon as the ball is played back the attacking team are live and can apply pressure.
Goalkeeper passes out to defending team who pass back again to Goalkeeper. The aim is to get 2 back passes in.
Once 2 back passes have been achieved, a shot at 1 of the 2 mini goals can be taken.
If the attacking team intercept, they are able to take a shot at the mini goals straight away.
Once one sequence has been achieved, rotate Goalkeeper.

COACHING POINTS

Do not allow the attacking team to be too aggressive initially so that the drill does not break down and player get a feel for it.
Goalkeepers to move around the area to always offer an outlet and try and switch play away from the congested area.
Defenders need to drop wide and ensure they are seen by the Goalkeeper.
3rd defender mimics the midfielder offering support in the centre of the pitch.

PROGRESSION

Increase the intensity by removing a defender so that it is now 2v2. Attackers will now create more of a challenge and the Goalkeeper will have to work harder to become the outlet.

Deal with the back pass with composure and skill to be an outlet for an under pressure defence and clear your lines. But itâs not always as simple as it seemsâ¦ work on coping with even the trickiest of passes!

Catch, Roll, Dive:

*AUDIO DESCRIPTION ON*

Goalkeeper steps away from cone comes through the gate receives a ball into hands
Returns to server then gets a low shot into dive close to body
Get into set position initially then step forward into low dive to save before cones in advance of initial gate

Notes:

Get the step in if required
If serve close too the body collapse legs and get hands to the ball in front of the body
Dive forward this called 'Attacking the dive'

Goalkeeping

Goalkeeping Passing Grid:

Set up 2 squares beside each ther with a goalkeeper in each square.
2 servers set up opposite each square with a ball each.
Goalkeepers to start at the back of their square and come to the front of the square to drop back again and receive a ball passed along the ground from the server opposite.
One touch on the ball to take the ball out of the side of the square and then pass the ball diagonally, to the other server.
Goalkeepers to then switch over to the other square.
Repeat several times before switching over the goalkeepers working and servers.

Dealing with Backpass Accuracy:

Set up 3 mini goals or small gates marked out with cones facing towards a goal.
Have 3 players behind each mini goal.
The ball is played into the Goalkeeper from various areas on the pitch.
As the ball is passed back to the Goalkeeper 2 of the players step in front of their mini goal, leaving 1 minigoal free for the Goalkeeper to play into.
The player who's mini goal is played into can take a shot if the Goalkeeper successfully hits the goal.
If the ball travels past the mini goal and is missed then the player takes a shot with that ball which becomes live.

Dive and Recover:

Starting on the middle cone the keeper moves out to their right to catch the first feed.

After getting back to their feet and rolling the ball back out they side-step back towards the middle cone, ready to dive and catch the next rolled ball from the second feeder.
