The PE and Sports premium has been doubled in the UK with the objective to achieve self-sustaining improvement in the quality of PE and Sport in primary schools. This money will help primary schools get the support and investment they need to develop the physical literacy of young people so they become competent and confident movers as they progress through school.

Sue Wilkinson MBE, afPE's CEO said: "afPE is delighted to hear that the Government will continue to invest in physical education and school sport. The doubling of the funding formula will help schools to continue to use physical education, sport and physical activity as a tool to improve educational attainment, emotional and physical health and well-being. Children and young people are our future and we must all work collectively to ensure that we enable them to make the right lifestyle choices, support families and engage communities to make a difference. afPE will update members once we have had further discussions with the Department."

Vision:

Schools must use the funding to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of PE and sport they offer. This means that the premium should be used to:

  • Develop or add to the PE and sport activities that your school already offers
  • Make improvements now that will benefit pupils joining the school in future years

Objectives:

With the school year starting this month, key indicators of the vision are:

  • The engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity, kick-starting healthy active lifestyles
  • The profile of PE and sport being raised across the school as a tool for whole school improvement
  • Increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport
  • Broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils
  • Increased participation in competitive sport

How to use the PE and sport premium:

  • Hire qualified sports coaches to work with teachers
  • Provide existing staff with training or resources to help them teach PE and sport more effectively
  • Introduce new sports or activities and encourage more pupils to take up sport
  • Run sport competitions

Measuring the impact:

Measuring the impact of the activities provided with sports premium funding can be achieved in different ways:

  • Look at progress in PE and sport directly
  • Look at participation levels of sport- both in and out of school
  • Look at progress in other areas of development such as self-esteem and confidence
  • Assessments can be made both formally and informally using school assessment systems as well as feedback from staff, parents and visitors to the school.

Sportplan provides content that will empower teachers and coaches and will support them to deliver high-quality PE lessons with confidence. An array of resources, ideas and tools are provided and staff can access over 15,000 drills, exercises and video techniques across 14 sports.
